Bella, 5yrs old, Gloucestershire

Bella is an (approximate) 5 year old rabbit at Windwhistle Warren. Bella was found as a stray in Matson near to Gloucester. She was not claimed and went to a local RSPCA where she was eventually adopted as a partner for another doe. Sadly that bonding did not work out and now she's at Windwhistle. Bella needs a gentle neutered husbun to cuddle up to. She is happy being an outdoor rabbit and am sure would like the opportunity to get outside and run around much more.

Gypsy is also quite bold and confident, but she is happy for geezer to take the lime light and steel all you attention, so she can be left to have a good old poke around and investigate everything. She can be quite kicky when picked up and handled, she just prefers to have all her paws firmly on the ground.

Milly and Ross, 7 & 3yrs, Twickenham

Milly & Ross are a lovely pair of rabbits at Animal Rescue & Care. Ross is a 7 year old mini lop and his partner Milly, age 3, is a Himalayan/Rex cross. On arrival it quickly became clear that Ross was the hen-pecked husbun. His lady likes to keep him in check and will also warn off anyone who takes an interest in him! We like the fact she's protective as sweet cuddly Ross has no front teeth. But this doesn't stop him hoovering up pellets and diced veggies at high speed.

Sandy, 6yrs old, Surrey

Sandy is a 6 year old Lop rabbit at Furry Friends Animal Rescue in Surrey. She came into the rescue in an appalling state. Sadly this has meant she has some ongoing problems which means new owners need to keep up with her care.

She is currently a bit overweight, so she gets a very messy bottom and needs assistance with cleaning herself daily. Once she's slimmed down that should get better though. She also came in with tear duct problems, they have been flushed but there is some permanent damage there.

Sandy has the sweetest nature you can imagine. She is very friendly and laid back. All she wants is a neutered male rabbit to live out the rest of her years with. She has been spayed, vaccinated and wormed. Read more about her here.

Welcome!

Welcome to OABunnies! (Old Age Bunnies that is.) We class an "OABunny" as a rabbit aged 5 or older.

With this blog I aim to highlight older rabbits in rescue and additional care needs you may need to consider if you want to take one (or two, or three, or four) on.

Some rabbits stay in rescue for years, so may not have started off in rescue as "old" but started off as youngsters, even babies, but got stuck maybe due to their "plainer" looks or being a bit more people shy than more friendly neighbours. Others end up in rescue in their "middle ages" after their family has got bored of caring for them or the kids have got bored of them. All very sad reasons!

These are my two rabbits, Bob and Pat, who I adopted when they were 4 years old and they are now 6 years old. They chose me and make me laugh every day!
